The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (I.I.F.T) was set up in 1963 by the Government of India as an autonomous organisation to help professionalise the country’s foreign trade management and increase exports by developing human resources, analysing and disseminating data and conducting research. The Institute visualises its future role as:

  • A catalyst for new ideas, concepts and skills for the internationalisation of the Indian economy.
  • The primary provider of training and research-based consultancy in the areas of international business, both for the corporate sector, Government and the student’s community.

Selection Procedure

I.I.F.T follows a rigorous procedure to make sure that only the crème-de-la-crème makes it to the institute. I.I.F.T conducts its own paper-pencil based entrance examination, conducted every year on the last Sunday of November, which started off way back in 1981. Around 40,000 students write the I.I.F.T entrance examination every year, with 1000 odd candidates being given a call for the essay-GD-PI round. Finally around 250 odd students make it to both the campuses combined, making I.I.F.T one of the most selective institutes in the country.

The Curriculum & Pedagogy

It has one of the most rigorous curriculums and has always been the second ranked institute in India in terms of pedagogy. 1460 hours of course-work, along with regular presentations, quizzes and assignments make it one of the most intensive curriculums in the country. Courses with an international focus are offered as core courses along with a mandatory foreign language course. It also hosts guest faculty from the industry as part of the curriculum. In the second year, a student takes up 10 electives. 4 in a domain gives a student a Major, while 2 in a domain gives a student a Minor. It offers a Major in Finance, Marketing, Operations and Trade with Minors in Strategy and Systems.

It is led by the convener and consists of 12 elected student members; 7 from Delhi campus and 5 from Kolkata campus, who manage all corporate interactions throughout the year and handle the summer and Final Placement Processes on campus.
